One of my goals in 2015 was to visit 12 museums, and to share details about those visits with you. Museums are great places to hide, to socialize, to think, to listen to audiobooks or music and to wander. They are also places to collect inspiration, to ponder, to absorb, to grow and to learn. Hopefully one of my visits will inspire one of yours.
MUSEUM VISIT 1/12: THE CINCINNATI ART MUSEUM
DATE OF VISIT: 8 January 2015
On this day, admission was free (like every single day) and parking was also free! It's just a few dollars otherwise.
The photo above is one of my favorite things in any museum I've ever been to, ever. It's a ROOM that the CAM acquired. It came from a very nice home of a devout religious family. The doorway straight ahead would have gone across a little skywalk attached to the main part of the house. Look at the walls, the trim, the doors, the hinges. Those things were made by hand, by a person. In a world of big box construction, techniques like tilt up construction and prefab housing.....this is such a contrast. What a feeling to be surrounded by it.
My favorite floor: 3rd floor, it's the contemporary art floor. I get lost in there and I've been there more times than I can count.
1. This is a great place for lunch. They have a great cafe, and the cafe has a great view. If you are apt to take lunch meetings, take one here.
2. The CAM regularly features special exhibitions of its own collection rather than bringing in exhibitions. The CAM has a huge, massive collection....and I think they are brilliant for taking this approach. It is so, so, so expensive to bring in outside exhibitions. Why do that when you have such a massive collection?
3. They are located in Eden Park. Plan to take a walk through the property if the weather is nice.
4. The gift shop is EXCELLENT. Add this to your radar as a great place to find something special.
